Magic the Gathering

Magic Circle club nights

We meet at the Clover Hotel, Chester rd. Erdington, Bham every Tuesday night from 8.00pm till midnight. Duel Types we play on club nights

We mainly play multi player games in groups of 4-6 players. We play a number of different duel variants but the most common for us is one we call Sudden Death Chaos we also play Sudden Death Restricted, Kill thy Neighbour, Emperor (if we have groups of 6 duellists), Two Headed Giant, Arena, & Round Robin

Duel Type Descriptions

Sudden Death Chaos

Any number of players from 3 or more may play this variant, any card from any magic set is permitted the only restriction is that you may not have more that 4 of any one card other than basic land and if your deck contains any cards from the Unhinged/Unglued sets all your cards in the deck must come from the Unhinged/Unglued sets. Your minimum deck size is 40 cards; there is no upper deck size (as long as you can shuffle it unaided). After each player shuffles his deck and has it cut by one of the other players play then proceeds like this, each player deals himself 7 cards and one player is randomly selected to go 1st . Any player may attack any other player in an attempt to finish him off, however when any one players life total is reduced to zero the player with the most life left wins in addition you cannot take someone out if you are not in a position to win yourself at that point. You are not permitted to use instant life gain cards or instant direct damage cards on the stack after someone has taken another players life total to zero (this prevents players “stealing” the win from other players right at the end. This is what we term as “Goal Hanging” and is most annoying) It is permissible however to use triggered abilities that are already on the field to steal the win as these are in plain view and should have been seen by the attacking player. We like this variant the most as it can be played with both odd and even numbers of players and no one has to wait around once they have lost for the others to finish before a new game starts. It also adds another level of strategy to the game, as you have to time your attacks just right and at the right opponents to secure a successful victory

Sudden Death Restricted

This is the same as Sudden Death Chaos apart from your deck is restricted in some way for example we my play with a “peasant“ themed decks, peasant decks may only contain 4 uncommon cards, any number of common cards & basic lands, no rare’s are permitted. Other restricted decks may be current expansion only or Unhinged/Unglued only or whatever restriction we all wish to apply.

Kill thy Neighbours

For 4 or more players in this game you must kill off both the player to your left and the player to your right to win. You cannot attack any other player but you can defend yourself and use global damage/ effects to indirectly attack other players. This variant is not as easy as it first seems as players are invariably sharing neighbours you have to be careful how much damage you direct to your opponents each turn

Two Headed Giant

A team game for teams of two players. Each team consists of two players with a communal 40 life they each player have their own manna but play each phase together they also attack the opposing team at the same time and also defend together any card that refers to a player or opponent refers to a team

Emperor

For 6 players this is a complex team game played in a circle for full details on how to play Emperor view the full rules at http//www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=magic/rules/emperor

Arena

This is played like sudden death chaos except that we also employ the large Arena cards as well

Round Robin

Standard one-on-one duels played against all other attendee’s on a single evening with the overall winner being the one who wins the most duels OTHER STUFF The magic Circle also does other one off events like the Yule Duel, our annual Xmas magic tourney and new expansion booster drafts etc. Look in on our forum and events diary for details of these and other events hosted by the Troll slayers
